
HP 3PAR Peer Persistence failover can occur when either the array or the site becomes unavailable,
as shown in Figure 42 (page 134) and Figure 43 (page 135)). To ensure that applications can
continue running without any interruption, a quorum witness is required to enable the automatic
failover.

The HP 3PAR Quorum Witness does not preclude the performance of manual peer-persistence
switchovers. Users may also want to execute a manual peer-persistence switchover in the following
circumstances:
• When vMotion is performed to migrate a VM from a source site to a target site.
• When a VM dies and the vSphere cluster brings up that VM on the remote site.
In these circumstances, a switchover ensures that the migrated VM can continue I/O operations
to the HP 3PAR StoreServ array that is local to the VM. See Figure 44 (page 136).
